Small Bug in Video Listing View

Tuesday, July 20th, 2010

A couple of you have reported that there is a small bug in video listing view of our vlogger apps for users with iPhone 3GS or iPhone 4 devices. The scenario is as follows:

  • You are using the app on WiFi, and you suspend the app by pressing the home button.
  • You leave your WiFi coverage area so the device switches to cellular
  • You resume the app by pressing the app’s icon.
  • You click “Load More” at the bottom of the video listing view to load more videos
  • Nothing happens

We’ve identified the cause of this bug and are working on a fix right now. Please note that pressing the Actions Button, then pressing refresh will re-fetch the videos and resolve the issue. Once refreshed, the “Load More” button will continue to work fine until the scenario above happens again.

The root of the problem is that for performance reasons, we automatically fetch more videos when on WiFi than on Cellular (this has always been the case). During the suspend cycle, if the device switches to Cellular from WiFi, the app is not made aware of this until after the resume cycle has finished. This results in a “fetch” for the incorrect number of videos.

We apologize for the inconveniance and assure you that we’ll get an update ASAP to correct this issue. In the meantime, if you notice that your “Load More” button does not work correctly, simply refresh the listing using the Actions Button.

It’s important to note that the app will still automatically check for new videos when resuming after being suspended for 15 minutes or more. This bug does not affect listings for new videos – it only affects this one scenario when you are using the “Load More” button to view older content.

Of course, keep in mind that you can always check for the latest videos manually by using the Refresh button on the actions menu. Thank you for your patience. Be sure to check the Dev Blog view inside the app or follow us on twitter @GeekUtils for the latest news and updates.

Unofficial iJ – Mobile Blog not working?

Thursday, April 15th, 2010

We are aware that the mobile blog view is currently not working in our Unofficial iJ app.  Tonight, iJustine moved everything from tastyblogsnack.com to ijustine.com, so the mobile viewer can’t “see” the blog any longer.  We just prepared and submitted an update to the app store, so hopefully it will be approved and available to you soon.

In the meantime – you can use the full “Web” view located on the “More” tab to see her entire blog so you don’t miss a beat 😉

PhillyD.tv isn’t working?

Monday, March 8th, 2010

If you are using our Unofficial Phil DeFranco app, you’ve probably noticed that the “mobile” and “web” tabs are not working like they used to.

Why is this happening?  Well – if you read Phil’s facebook fan page, you’ll note that he has changed the way that phillyd.tv works.  The blog that used to be there has been dismantled, and the site now simply leads you to his YouTube channel.

Because the blog is no longer there, clicking the “Web” tab in our app will simply redirect you to the mobile YouTube page, and the “Mobile” tab (which used to give you a streamlined version of his blog) now only returns an error.

We are working on an updated version of the app to submit this evening to Apple that simply removes these two tabs now that they are no longer a part of Phil’s content stream.   Look for v1.2 of our Unofficial PhillyD app to be available for update later in the week.

In the meantime, simply ignore those two tabs – the rest of the app will continue to function as it always has.

No Videos? (updated 9:26PM EST)

Thursday, February 4th, 2010

We are getting reports that the video views are not showing any results. We are currently investigating the issue and will post an update shortly.

Updated 4:52PM EST, 2/4/10: We have contacted YouTube. The problem appears to be intermittent and is related to the YouTube API and not our application. We will have another update soon. Thanks for your patience!

Last Update 9:26PM EST, 2/4/10: The problems earlier seemed to stem from DNS issues that prevented our app from locating YouTube to retrieve video data. We will add meaningful error messages in the next release. For the time being, if your video listings appear blank, or if clicking “Load more” does not load any more videos and then disappears, take a break for a few minutes and then try again – it may be a similar intermittent network issue. If, after 20 minutes the error is persisting, please do not hesitate to contact us using the button in the “About” tab of your app and we will do our best to help.

Remember, the only way we can improve with each new release is to hear from you, our users. Getting frustrated, deleting the app, and giving us a bad review isn’t helpful ;). We’re always here to help!

YouTube slow in the evening?

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

We’ve noticed over the past couple of months that evening YouTube performance is getting increasingly worse. This has been especially true on our mobile devices that we use in our test lab. Between the hours of 5:30PM and 11:00pm EST, YouTube streaming can get quite sporadic and unresponsive. We are currently working on applications for the iPhone and iPod touch platform that utilize the device’s built-in YouTube player, so initially we thought perhaps we had a bug that was causing the problem.

Further investigation and countless hours of internet searching have illustrated to us that this is a widespread issue. In fact, this evening, while showing off our new iPhone application, we were side-by-side streaming content from YouTube on our 27″ iMac development machine and our iPhone 3GS and both would stutter and pause during playback. The desktop version of the stream even waited for around 30 seconds to start playing!

It is currently our belief that all of the new YouTube services that are being offered, when combined with the huge amount of high-definition content being uploaded, is simply taxing the YouTube server farm. We hope to see resolution to this soon – our latest apps depend on it 😉

In the meantime – a quick solution that someone has suggested to us (not ideal, but it works) is to switch your iPhone wireless off if you’re going to be streaming during these hours until this problem is resolved. When you switch wireless off, the iPhone YouTube player will automatically stream the lower bandwidth h.264 or MP4 video streams which are lighter weight and do not seem to be as affected by these issues.
