Peter Hollens Official App is out!

Sunday, April 8th, 2012

When Peter Hollens contacted me a few months ago and said that he really wanted to work with me on an app I was flattered — he knew he wanted an app – and loved the workflow that the GeekUtils framework provided. I didn’t know much of Peter before this introduction, but I have grown to truly appreciate his talents – both vocally and creatively. It didn’t take long for me to happily agree to create an iOS product to showcase his content.

Peter has been involved in a capella music since 1999 when he co-founded the University of Oregon’s award winning a capella group “On the Rocks”. In 2010, Peter was featured on NBC’s “The Sing Off” and received acclaim from the judges for his solo performances.

Peter records and produces his music from his home studio in Eugene, Oregon and has recently recorded for Sony and Epic records. In February, Peter released his first full album which is available in iTunes (click here).

If you have not introduced yourself to Peter’s content yet – allow me to introduce you 🙂 Below find two videos – his latest video at the time of this writing (which has already gone viral) – a Skyrim themed video featuring Peter’s amazing a capella talents combined with Lindsey Stirling’s amazing violin performance. The second video is one that I particularly enjoy, Peter’s original song entitled “Sleepwalking”.

Check them out – then go download the app and buy his tunes 🙂

Peter Chao Official v1.1 available

Sunday, February 6th, 2011

The update we mentioned in our last post for the Peter Chao official app is now available in the store.  This update fixes some small bugs and, more importantly, adds Peter’s revitalized “PeterChaoTime” channel into the app.

The tab layout has changed slightly – but remember, you can always edit the tab arrangement in any of our apps to put the content you care about most front and center on the main tab bar.  To do this, simply visit the “More” tab, and press “Edit” in the upper right corner of the screen and drag the icons on to the tab bar.  When you’re done, press “Done” and your settings will be saved so that each time you load the app, the layout you specified will be used.

This update is recommended for anyone using the Peter Chao Official app.  To update to the latest version, simply launch the App Store on your device, and visit the “Updates” tab to download.   Remember that you can also check which version you are currently using by checking the Version number found on the About tab inside every one of our apps.

Enjoy!

Updates for BlackBoxTV and PeterChao Official

Thursday, February 3rd, 2011

We’ve got some updates that are in process for you two of our popular applications.

BlackBoxTV has been updated to 1.5 and the update is already available in the app store today.   This update is recommended for all users of BlackBoxTV and includes some small bug fixes and enhancements for the BlackBoxTV store.

PeterChao Official has been updated to 1.1 and the update has been submitted to Apple and will be available soon.  This update adds the PeterChaoTime channel into the app and includes some small bug fixes and performance enhancements to the basic app framework that are being rolled out to all of our apps.

Apple has been very quick lately in approving application updates, so we’re hopeful that PeterChao 1.1 will be released into the app store sometime Super Bowl Weekend.

We hope you enjoy these incremental updates and welcome you to always use the “About” tab inside of any of our apps to contact us to provide feature suggestions, report bugs, or to just say hi 😉

Thanks for an exciting first year!

On January 17, 2010, we launched our first app into the app store – Unofficial iJustine.  At this time, I had developed an app to watch some of my favorite YouTube celebs in a convenient and easy to use interface – mainly because I was not happy with the built-in YouTube player on my iPhone.

I decided to put it in the store because I figured that others might enjoy what I had created, and thought it would be a good way to generate buzz for my newly created “GeekUtils” brand.  I am so thrilled that so many people are now enjoying the apps I have created, and that so many awesome content creators have contacted me to provide their official apps.

In one short year, I have gone from a single free app in the store to sixteen!  Of these sixteen, 12 are official applications for talented YouTube personalities with content varying from the traditional blog to short films that rival what cable and network television has to offer.

Across these 16 free apps, there have been almost 355,000 downloads – and daily usage continues to climb.  We currently see about 65,000 unique sessions in our apps every day – on average, that’s more than one app launch every two seconds.

Additionally, most of our free apps have consistently remained in the “whats hot” section of the Social Networking app category in iTunes – an awesome achievement that keeps a smile on my face – all thanks to all of you.

In one short year, there have been almost 12 million sessions in our suite of applications – this is so exciting to me and I thank each and every one of you who have taken the time to check out our apps, rate them in the store, and provide feedback so we can continue to make them even better.

Additionally, I would like to thank each of you who have taken the time to purchase any one of our paid apps – AutoTV, GamerTV, Education TV, or TypeCam.  These four apps are our bread and butter – and sales of these apps are the only means we can fund future development of our free applications.  If you have not downloaded one of these yet, please take a moment to check them out.  Each of them is only 99 cents, and they definitely are worth every penny.

Once again – thank you for an incredible year – I’m excited to continue this awesome trend this year, and look forward to providing new apps and supporting new platforms in 2011.  Cheers 🙂
