Important Updates for ALL Apps – please read!

Thursday, July 7th, 2011

We have released an important set of updates for all of the apps based on our “Vlogger” framework.

GeekUtils has moved to new server hardware – in order to continue to use our apps un-interrupted, please visit the app store and update to the latest versions ASAP. These latest versions were released last week, so if you have already updated – thank you – we hope you’re enjoying the app.

To find out what version(s) you are using, please load the app and take a look at the “About” page (found on the “More” tab inside the app). On the lower right corner of this screen you will find the version number.

The latest versions are as follows:

Please check the version of your applications using the method described above, and compare to the version in the list.  If the versions don’t match what’s shown in this list, please update as soon as possible by visiting the App Store or by clicking the links above.

This update is REQUIRED in order to continue using these applications once the old server is decommissioned.

Thanks, and enjoy!

We want to hear from you!

Wednesday, February 16th, 2011

It’s no mistaking that 2011 is off to a great start here at GeekUtils.  We have some great updates and enhancements planned for all of our apps this year, but we still want to hear from you.  Do you have ideas for new features or functions?  Maybe you know of a great new YouTube channel and you think we should contact them to build them an app?  Maybe you’ve found a bug in one of our products, or have a suggestion for an enhancement that would make one of the features of our app easier to use?

If any of these describes you – please contact us.  The quickest way is to simply open any of our apps, go to the “More” tab, touch “About” and then touch the “Send GeekUtils and e-Mail” button.  (NOTE: this is the case in the majority of our apps, but in some apps the “About” tab is located elsewhere in the app).  This will pop up the e-mail app where you can send us your thoughts, suggestions, complaints, bug reports, or just take a moment to say hello and tell us how you like our apps :).

We look forward to hearing from you!

iOS 4.2 update on iPad resolves playback issues.

Saturday, December 4th, 2010

If you remember a while back, we posted a blog entry where we described that YouTube video playback on an iPad (when running an iPhone/iPod app) was not working correctly.  Once playback started, the video was locked in portrait mode, and there was no way to exit the video once playback was finished.

As we described in this same blog entry, the iOS 4.2 update resolves this issue.  If you are using YouTube playback on the iPad, be sure to update your iPad to the new iOS 4.2 (available through iTunes).  Once your iPad is updated, videos will play back as expected.

UPDATED: Server Outage Resolved

Monday, November 29th, 2010

The server that runs our push notifications has experienced an outage this AM of unknown origin.  We are working to restore the service as we speak.

Once the server goes active, all push notifications that are queued up will be sent as normal.   Until the server resumes normal operation, you may notice that the badge values on our apps will not reset after loading the application.   This issue will be corrected once the server starts responding again.

We will update this post as soon as this outage has been corrected.

Update 11/29/2010 2:15PM EST – This outage has been resolved.  Any pending push notifications have been sent and you should now notice that any of our applications should correctly reset the badge value upon launch.  We apologize for the outage.

If you are new to our applications, and you installed one between 3AM and 2PM EST today – please make sure to load the app again (just tap the icon, allow the app to load, and then exit) to ensure that your push notification preference is correctly registered in our push server.

Thanks again for your patience and understanding!

Why you need to set date and time correctly.

Thursday, August 19th, 2010

We’ve gotten a couple of people who have e-mailed us over the past couple of months where they tell us that in any of our apps, none of the videos will play.

The solution for this problem is simple.  When the iPod touch, iPad (and iPhones on some carriers) go completely dead, they lose the date and time settings.   The YouTube authorization algorithm requires that the date and time are set properly, because the device receives authorization for a given timeframe to play a video.

If the date and time settings are wrong, when YouTube sends back an authorization timeframe, it will always be wrong versus your device, so the videos will not play.

You would also notice that when your date and time are incorrectly set, you cannot download from the app store.  For these reasons, it is always important to make sure to reset your time settings if you ever allow the iPod or iPhone to go completely dead.

Happy YouTubing!
