8.3 million push notifications served!

Friday, January 28th, 2011

We’re very happy to announce that as of 11:00PM EST, our push notification server has happily served up over 8.3 million push notifications since it went live on 10/19/2010.

As we announced before, rather than relying on a third party push notification provider, we chose to build and maintain our own push notification server.  This helps us keep our costs to a minimum, and deliver as many push notifications as we like to everyone using our suite of applications.  Fortunately, this server has been running extremely well for us from launch day until now, and we look forward to serving up millions more.

Remember, push notification settings are totally configurable by you, the app user.  Apple provides a standard way for you to configure push notifications for ANY app on your phone that has enabled push.  Using the built-in settings, you can decide to individually enable or disable push notification text, notification sounds, and even the little badge (number) that appears on the app icon.  For a refresher course on how to do this – please check out our earlier blog entry on this subject by clicking here.

Thanks again for being faithful users of our products!

Thanks for an exciting first year!

Sunday, January 23rd, 2011

On January 17, 2010, we launched our first app into the app store – Unofficial iJustine.  At this time, I had developed an app to watch some of my favorite YouTube celebs in a convenient and easy to use interface – mainly because I was not happy with the built-in YouTube player on my iPhone.

I decided to put it in the store because I figured that others might enjoy what I had created, and thought it would be a good way to generate buzz for my newly created “GeekUtils” brand.  I am so thrilled that so many people are now enjoying the apps I have created, and that so many awesome content creators have contacted me to provide their official apps.

In one short year, I have gone from a single free app in the store to sixteen!  Of these sixteen, 12 are official applications for talented YouTube personalities with content varying from the traditional blog to short films that rival what cable and network television has to offer.

Across these 16 free apps, there have been almost 355,000 downloads – and daily usage continues to climb.  We currently see about 65,000 unique sessions in our apps every day – on average, that’s more than one app launch every two seconds.

Additionally, most of our free apps have consistently remained in the “whats hot” section of the Social Networking app category in iTunes – an awesome achievement that keeps a smile on my face – all thanks to all of you.

In one short year, there have been almost 12 million sessions in our suite of applications – this is so exciting to me and I thank each and every one of you who have taken the time to check out our apps, rate them in the store, and provide feedback so we can continue to make them even better.

Additionally, I would like to thank each of you who have taken the time to purchase any one of our paid apps – AutoTV, GamerTV, Education TV, or TypeCam.  These four apps are our bread and butter – and sales of these apps are the only means we can fund future development of our free applications.  If you have not downloaded one of these yet, please take a moment to check them out.  Each of them is only 99 cents, and they definitely are worth every penny.

Once again – thank you for an incredible year – I’m excited to continue this awesome trend this year, and look forward to providing new apps and supporting new platforms in 2011.  Cheers 🙂

Thanks to an awesome referral by Charles Trippy, we’re happy to announce that we have partnered with Peter Chao to provide the Official Peter Chao application into the app store!

For those of you who are unfamiliar with Peter, he’s a talented comic that produces hilarious sketch comedy videos and vlogs on YouTube.  He’s had nearly 100 million video views, nearly 18 million channel views, and he has over 570,000 subscribers on his main YouTube channel.

The Official Peter Chao application is available now in the iOS App Store (iPhone/iPod/iPad) and gives you easy and convenient access to:

  • Watch videos on either of Peter’s popular YouTube Channels
  • See his latest tweets on twitter.
  • Check out what’s new on his facebook fan page.
  • See the latest merchandise in both of Peter’s online stores

Also – as with all of our other apps, this new addition includes quick and easy access to our Developer Blog, App Listing, and an “About” tab where you can offer your feedback and suggestions – all three of these awesome features are right on the “More” tab within the app.

To download, simply click or touch here, use the application grid on the right side of our homepage at www.geekutils.com, or use the “More Apps” view in any of our existing apps for a quick and easy way to get directly to the app listing.

BlackBoxTV and PhillyD Updates

Friday, January 14th, 2011

We have released a couple of new updates (available now in the app store) for our popular PhillyD Official and BlackBoxTV applications.

There are a few small bug fixes behind the scenes – but the most noticable changes are in the audio and visual elements.  Both new apps now feature a great custom sound for push notifications.  PhillyD’s app has an awesome monkey call, and BlackBoxTV has an “other-worldly” spooky alert sound.

BlackBoxTV also features a completely new red theme that is in-line with the latest changes to blackboxtelevision.com.

We hope you enjoy these updates and we will have more coming very soon for all of our apps 😉
