Configuring Push Notifications

Thursday, December 2nd, 2010

Many people contact us and ask us how they can turn off badges for notifications (the little number on the app icon).  Some people want to leave badges on but disable the sounds or alerts when a push is received.

Configuring notification options like this is very easy, and it’s actually handled by way of the standard settings app that Apple provides on each and every iPhone, iPod, or iPad.

To configure push notifications, simply do the following:

Open Settings from the main screen, and select “Notifications”, as pictured below:

From this screen, choose the app for which you want to configure notification options:

Once you’re in the configure screen for the app you want, you can use the sliders to select which options you want enabled for push notifications for that app:

If Badges are on, when a push is received, you will see a number on the app icon indicating the number of videos that have been posted since the last time you opened the app.

If Sounds are on, the default alert sound will be played when a push is received.

If Alerts are on, when a push is received, an alert will be displayed (Similar to a SMS message) containing the name of the app, the name of the video, and the channel that the video was posted on.

Now you know how to configure push. Keep in mind, this is the standard way to configure push notifications – and will work with ANY app that supports push notifications. Some applications include additional menus with more detailed push notification options, however, this is the Apple approved standard way for users to interact with the push service.

YouTube outage affecting some apps…

Thursday, December 2nd, 2010

Currently, there is an outage with the YouTube data service that we use to retrieve video data for our apps.  In some apps, this is causing the video listings on some of the channels to show up blank, and the app will report that “YouTube is experiencing issues” when you try to refresh or retrieve the video listing (OlgaKay’s main channel, for example).

We are aware of the problem, and have reported it to YouTube.  This is NOT an error in our application – this is a YouTube outage.  As soon as YouTube resolves this issue, the applications will resume normal function.

Thanks for your patience, we’ll keep our fingers crossed that YouTube resolves this issue soon.

UPDATED 12/2/2010 6:00PM EST – YouTube has resolved this outage. Any affected apps should be functioning normally now.

UPDATED: Server Outage Resolved

Monday, November 29th, 2010

The server that runs our push notifications has experienced an outage this AM of unknown origin.  We are working to restore the service as we speak.

Once the server goes active, all push notifications that are queued up will be sent as normal.   Until the server resumes normal operation, you may notice that the badge values on our apps will not reset after loading the application.   This issue will be corrected once the server starts responding again.

We will update this post as soon as this outage has been corrected.

Update 11/29/2010 2:15PM EST – This outage has been resolved.  Any pending push notifications have been sent and you should now notice that any of our applications should correctly reset the badge value upon launch.  We apologize for the outage.

If you are new to our applications, and you installed one between 3AM and 2PM EST today – please make sure to load the app again (just tap the icon, allow the app to load, and then exit) to ensure that your push notification preference is correctly registered in our push server.

Thanks again for your patience and understanding!

Happy Holidays and Thank You’s

Thursday, November 18th, 2010

As we come up upon the holiday season, I just wanted to take a moment to say Happy Holidays and best wishes to all.

I also wanted to take a moment to say thank you for all of the downloads and support. Since January, our free apps have logged over 8.5 million unique sessions across nearly a half million downloads, and we are now averaging one app usage every 2 seconds worldwide. This is amazing and very humbling for a tiny company like GeekUtils – I can’t possibly thank everyone enough for giving us a chance and installing our apps on your device.

We couldn’t get to that point without partnering with some great YouTube celebrities, and we thank all of those who have given us the opportunity to work with them to provide their official applications into the app store.

Finally, I want to send a quick thank you to everyone who has taken the time to contact us using the “About” tab in any of our apps. Whether it be a user asking how to use a particular feature in our apps, or contacting us to make a feature suggestion – we appreciate that you are taking time out of your schedule to share your comments. In the end, it’s only by interaction with our valuable users that we can continue to add new features and functions, and make our apps into the experience that works well for everyone.
